Janáček’s opera at the Brno National Theater (NdB) has been shortlisted for this year’s The International Opera Awards. The NdB’s production of The Greek Passion, directed by Jiří Heřman, has been nominated in the “New Production” category.
The award ceremony will take place on 28 November 2022 at Teatro Real in Madrid. Also nominated in the same category as the National Theater Brno production are the Bregenz Festival productions of Madama Butterfly (d. Andreas Homoki); The Handmaid’s Tale from the English National Opera (d. Annilese Miskimmon); L’incoronazione di Poppea from Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (d. Ted Huffman); La Voix humaine/Les Mamelles de Tirésias from Glyndebourne (d. Laurent Pelly), and Il trittico (d. Christof Loy) from the Salzburg Festival.
This production of The Greek Passion premiered at the Janáček Theater on 5 November 2021 and was created as part of the Janáček Brno 2020 Festival. “The nomination is great news for our ensemble and of course for me, which I appreciate very much. I am delighted that the work of our ensemble is receiving international recognition, all the more so because the award is linked to the work of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů,” said Jiří Heřman, head of the Janáček Opera of the NdB and director of the production.
Composer Bohuslav Martinů, who himself experienced the fate of a refugee, turned the opera into a work of great humanistic message about the power of faith that is still relevant today. In 2023, the Janáček Theater will offer several performances of The Greek Passion: on 22 February (with a lecture introduction), 5 March and 2 April.
The International Opera Awards have been presented annually since 2012, promoting opera as a genre and talents in the field of opera, charting worldwide opera production and honoring artists and artistic achievements. The awards are judged and presented by an expert jury headed by John Allison.
