This year’s European Music Day in Brno will be dedicated to the broad theme of local amateur choirs. The event, to be held on 21 June at the Zelný trh Square in Brno, is the largest planned event of a year-long project called the Year of Choirs under the auspices of the Office for Brno – UNESCO City of Music. More than thirty choirs will perform there.
Our intention is to make visible, map out, and appreciate the diverse, high quality and very large amateur music scene. You will see and hear one part of it at the upcoming Year of Choirs happening. In Brno, choral activities are performed by academic, school, church, and purely amateur ensembles of all ages. There are more than a hundred choirs in Brno and the surrounding area alone,” says David Dittrich, chief coordinator for the Brno UNESCO City of Music Office.
The event itself, which is free of charge for visitors, will begin on 21 June 2023 at 4:00 pm at the Zelný trh Square, where thirty Brno choirs will gradually present themselves. As a guest of the evening, the musical group HRADIŠŤAN & Jiří Pavlica will perform from 6:00 pm. The event will culminate with a joint finale of all participating choirs under the direction of choirmaster Petr Kolář. The folk song “Ej lásko, lásko” will be performed, as well as a specially composed song by composer Miloš Štědron.
The Year of Choirs highlights amateur and semi-professional choirs, their life, operation, and activities. In addition to the current list of active choirs, a calendar is being created in which choirs will include selected concerts and performances they wish to present this year. Detailed information and news about the Year of Choirs can be found on the Facebook page Brno – City of Music.
