Tanec a Handicap (Dance and Disability) is a festival of physical theatre and expressive dance in Brno. In the Czech Republic, it is the only festival that gives space to dance groups, in which both disabled and healthy people perform together.
The festival is held every two years. This year's fourth festival will take place on Saturday, 2 April 2016 at the JAMU Orlí Street Theatre. Starting at 5:00 p.m., the audience will have the opportunity to see the fairytale Na paši (On the Pasture) performed by the Slovak Divadlo z Pasáže (Theatre from the Arcade), afterwards at 7:00 p.m. the unique project of five integrated dance groups entitled Dualita (Duality): a dance collage composed of ten-minute performances of all groups. The festival will also include movement workshops for the public.
The Tanec a handicap project originated in 2009. It was founded by Jitka Semotamová as a platform for the meeting of handicapped and healthy people who share a common interest in contemporary dance and physical theatre. The main objective is to change the situation in the Czech Republic, where there is still a large gap in working with disabilities in the field of dance. The project creates space for the presentation of the art of dance groups of the disabled to the general public, it offers opportunities for changing the view of disability as a means of expressing opinions, emotions and personalities of the individual dancers, and strives for tearing apart the deep-rooted societal myths about disability. The main part of the Tanec a handicap project is the festival of dance groups from the Czech Republic and abroad of the same name, where only groups consisting of both disabled and healthy dancers perform.
