The comical opera of Bohuslav Martinů directed by Vendelína Osvaldová was staged by students of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts.
Bohuslav Martinů wrote the libretto of the opera Mandolina in Italian based on the play of Carlo Goldoni La Locandiera. As part of the graduate’s performance of JAMU students the opera will be introduced in Czech. The opera is set in the 16th century; however, director Vendelína Osvaldová set it in the present day. The main character is Mirandolina (Pavla Radostová), who lives with her servant Fabrizio (Michal Robotka) in her own dilapidated hotel in the middle of an African desert. All the men who ever come to the hotel fall in love with the beautiful hotel owner. Her charm and Fabrizio’s business mind are the only sources of income. The tangle of intrigue and schemes and humorous misunderstandings reaches unexpected conclusions. The premiere will take place on Saturday 21 November at 7 p.m. at the Theatre at Orlí.
Bohuslav Martinů (between 1890 and 1959) was Josef Suk’s student and later on he studied under Albert Rousell in Paris. Among his compositions six symphonies, four string quartets, six operas and many other compositions can be found. Martinů rose to fame all over the world and as a composer he ranks among the leading artists of 20th century Modernism.
