It is the last opportunity for the audience from Brno to see Andriana Kohútková as Cio-Cio-San, Danish tenor Magnus Vigilius in the role of Pinkerton and Roman Janál as Sharpless in the famous piece by Giacomo Puccini.
The libretto for the tragic two-act opera was written by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The story takes place in the early 20th century in Nagasaki, Japan. The love story between a Japanese geisha and an American officer will be performed by the Janáček Opera directed by Jiří Nekvasil. This season’s last performance of Madama Butterfly will take place on Saturday, 23 April at 7:00 p.m. in the Janáček Theatre.
Slovak soprano Adriana Kohútková is a guest artist in the role of Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly). She graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava under Professor Hana Štolfová-Bandová and has been the leading soloist of the Slovak National Theatre since 1993. She received an award of the Slovak Literary Fund for her performances in the roles of Melisande (1996), Tsarevna (2002) and Tatiana (2006), and the Fric Kafenda Award for concert performances. Baritone Roman Janál, soloist of the Brno National Theatre, will perform alongside her. Guest Danish tenor Magnus Vigilius, a graduate from the Royal Danish Academy, will appear in the role of Pinkerton. Vigilius has worked in the Funen Opera, Scottish Opera and the Royal Danish Opera, regularly cooperates with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Odense Symphony Orchestra, etc. In the summer of 2016, he will appear as Erik (The Flying Dutchman) for the Opera on Skäret and in the 2016/17 season in the roles of Leander (Carl Nielsen: Maskarade) and Siegmund; (Valkyrie) for the Royal Danish Opera. The role of Pinkerton was his debut in Brno; he will return to the Janáček Theatre in the autumn as Boris in the new production of opera Katya Kabanova, which will open the 2016 Janáček Brno Festival.
