Today, to the strains of the first movement of Janáček's Confidential Letters, the contract with the contractor of the Janáček Cultural Centre was officially signed at the New Town Hall.
"The team in charge of the Janáček Cultural Centre project has had a really challenging six months. They've had to answer a deluge of questions from bidders about the tender documentation. In addition, there was uncertainty about how long it would take the Office for the Protection of Competition to reach a decision and what the outcome would be," said Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková, adding: "No objections were raised regarding the decision on the selection of the contractor within the legal deadline and the latest ruling of the Chairman of the Office for the Protection of Competition is final, so we were able to sign the contract for the construction of the Janáček Cultural Centre today. Finally, we are moving on from the paperwork to the actual construction work. The construction site will be handed over in the coming days. Work on the construction will then begin. At the same time, the demolition of the former substation of the Hotel International will be started as part of the preparatory work."
In addition to Mayor Markéta Vaňková, David Grund, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Brno Communications, signed on behalf of the contracting authority. Signing on behalf of the contractor were representatives of three companies, OHLA ŽS, a. s., STRABAG Pozemní a inženýrské stavitelství, s. r. o., and UNISTAV CONSTRUCTION, a. s., which form a consortium called JKC Brno.
"This moment turns the dreams of our listeners, the entire cultural community and the Philharmonic into reality. The new hall will fill the gap on the cultural map of Brno and the Czech Republic as a whole, and in this sense it is a gift to the public and musicians. We can't wait to be able to host the greatest musical and social occasions, and audiences are sure to enjoy coming to the new hall," said Marie Kučerová, Director of the Brno Philharmonic, who was also present at the signing.
The selection of the contractor with the most advantageous bid in the tender was decided by Brno City Council on 7 August 2024. The contract is worth CZK 2,298,600,000 excluding VAT, with a 36-month lead time. The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic will contribute CZK 600 million, Brno Communications CZK 332 million and the South Moravian Region CZK 100 million. The rest will be paid by the City of Brno from its budget. For information, visualisations and updates on the project, please visit the website.
