July 2024 Cultural newsletter from the BCH Department of Culture

The Brno Culture Newsletter presents an overview of what is happening in the city’s theatres, clubs, summer festivals and other cultural events in Brno.

Dear fans and aficionados of Brno culture,

A few days ago, the Ambassador of France, Stéphane Crouzat, visited the New Town Hall. He took up his post only this spring and the reason for his visit to Brno was the residency project for KREILU illustrators. The first artist to take advantage of this opportunity was his compatriot Guy Pradel from Strasbourg, whose work can be seen in the central building of the Jiří Mahen Library during September. The Ambassador commended the project itself, and it was very pleasant to hear other words of praise for Brno. His programme included a visit to the water tanks on Žlutý kopec. That was no surprise, as the summer visitor numbers confirmed our assumption that these unique underground structures will attract tourists from both home and abroad. I believe that August will see the opening of the multimedia exhibition in the attic and other upcoming new attractions in the Church of St James, the reconstruction of which Brno also helped to fund.

Wishing you a colourful Indian summer and a successful start to the new season.

Markéta Vanková

Mayor of the City of Brno

19th Brno Cultural Forum: The role of the cultural and creative industries in the development of Brno

We are planning the 19th annual Brno Cultural Forum, which will take place on 22 October 2024 at the KUMST Brno creative hub at Údolní 19 at 1 p.m.

This time we will focus mainly on the evaluation and update of the Culture and Creative Industries Strategy, focusing mainly on the first, analytical part of the whole process. Besides a summary of the needs and potential of Brno's cultural scene and planned measures, you can also look forward to information about the cultural and creative industries obtained through their ongoing mapping. We will also be presenting the international web application Polyloop for evaluating strategic documents, which we are involved in developing, with the participation of our Irish colleagues.

Cultural grants for 2025 (one-year) and 2025-2026 (two-year)

Until the end of September, you can still apply for a grant for the year 2025 or for 2025-2026 online at dotace.brno.cz/oblastkultury.

Unsure how to go about it? Take a look at the video tutorial we’ve prepared for you.

If you missed the training at the end of August and can’t find the answers to your question in the guide, book yourself a consultation; you can find the contacts HERE.

Culture Brno educational workshops for the cultural and creative scene

In collaboration with other partners, we are launching a series of educational workshops for the cultural and creative scene. Back in early August, we covered the grants; it’s now time for the data.

How is Brno's cultural and creative scene doing? Are there any surveys about it? Where can I get data about the city and especially about culture? We'll answer these and other questions, and you'll gain new insights and skills in data in the cultural and creative industries.

The workshop Data in Culture and Creativity will take place on 11 September 2024 in the "Horseshoe" at the New Town Hall (a meeting room accessible from the courtyard). You need to register for the workshop using the registration form as capacity is limited.

REGISTRATION

Outputs from the Literature themed group

Since March, we have been meeting with you to discuss issues, needs and initiatives within the cultural and creative industries. The results from these discussions provide us with feedback to enable us to evaluate the implementation of the city's cultural policy, but also serve as an indicator of what we should focus on in the future, either by introducing new measures, or as part of the follow-up Culture and Creative Industries Strategy. We also discussed literature in Brno. You can read the minutes of the meeting HERE.

KREILU residency programme for illustrators

We inaugurated a new residency programme, KREILU (Creative Residency for ILUstrators), which we are implementing in cooperation with the Jiří Mahen Library in Brno, Central Vapeur in Strasbourg, the French Institute in Prague and the Czech Centre in Paris. The KREILU programme is part of the wider Villa Bohêma residency scheme between France and the Czech Republic. The first ever KREILU resident is Guy Pradel from Strasbourg, who will spend the whole of September in Brno and will run two workshops on the topic of illustration. At the same time, in September you can see an exhibition presenting a cross-section of his work at the Jiří Mahen Library on Kobližná.

The public workshop will take place on 23 September 2024 at 5 p.m. in the small social hall on the 4th floor of the Jiří Mahen Central Library. It will be held in English. Guy Pradel will tell the participants about his career and work as an illustrator. It will also be an interesting opportunity to learn about the illustrator and self-publishing scene in Strasbourg, as well as the Central Vapeur association, its illustration festival and its role in supporting artists.

On Saturday, 24 August, the Korean radio orchestra KBS Symphony Orchestra with its musical director - Finnish conductor and violinist Pietari Inkinen - came to Brno's Špilberk Festival with an exclusively romantic repertoire. The invitation was also accepted by South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, a graduate of the prestigious Julliard School.  more

For a quarter of a century now, the Brno Philharmonic has been organising the Špilberk Festival at the end of August in the courtyard of the castle of the same name. Four open-air musical evenings offer the audience a selection of concerts featuring classical, film and computer music, as well as often jazz and other genres. This makes it a diverse mix of performers and repertoires with an often pleasant, summery, laid-back ambience. This year's big and rapdily sold-out attraction was the Wednesday evening of 21 August, full of melodies from the James Bond films, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, headed by world-renowned conductor, composer and arranger Steven Mercurio. During the concert, the audience also got to enjoy singers Sara MilfajtováVendula Příhodová and David Krausmore

As part of its European tour, the Taiwanese Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC), under the direction of artistic director and choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, took the city up on its invitation and visited Brno. The concert was held on Monday, 13th August in the hall of the newly renovated Passage Hotel.  more

The final concert of this year's season of the Brno Philharmonic was devoted to works by Antonín Dvořák and Jean Sibelius at the Janáček Theatre. On Thursday, 20 June, Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt, who had not appeared before a Brno audience since January last year, took the lead of the Philharmonic. In the first half of the programme, the orchestra was accompanied by violinist Alexander Sitkovetskymore

In the spirit of the idea that Brno and folklore belong together, the Folklore Ensemble Happening of the Year took place on Thursday 6 June. The event was organised by the Brno UNESCO City of Music Office in cooperation with the Brno Dances and Sings association. The event thus became part of a long-term project that set out to map the amateur music scene in Brno, and not only folk music. Last year Brno City of Music reached out to choirs in a similar way, and in the future will host garage bands and more. This just goes to prove the diversity of Brno's music scene, not only as regards professional ensembles, but also enthusiastic amateurs for whom music is an inseparable part of their lives.  more
