On the occasion of the anniversary of the composer's death, the premiere of his 25th symphony will be performed in the Church of St. Augustine by Ensemble Opera Diversa.
With the church concert, Ensemble Opera Diversa will commemorate the musical legacy of composer F. G. Emmert from Brno, who died on 19 April 2015. The programme will feature Jákobův zápas / Jacob's Struggle (Concerto for viola and strings) and 25th Symphony („Píseň K tobě byl poslán anděl“ / “Song Angel Was Sent To You" for viola, organ and soprano, strings). EOD is led by conductor Ondrej Olos, and the soloists are Milan Paľa on viola, Marek Paľa on organ, and Hana Škarková with vocals. The concert will take place on 26 April at 7:30 p.m. in the Church of St. Augustine.
František Gregor Emmert (1940-2015) studied composition in Jan Kapr's class at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts, and as a postgraduate student of art he continued his studies under Miloslav Ištvan. After completing his postgraduate programme, he taught music theory and instrumentation at the same school. In the years 1975-2012, he also taught composition. Spiritual themes in a wide range from the use of biblical and liturgical texts, sacred poetry to inspiration in purely instrumental compositions clearly dominate his extensive work, including symphonies, the number of which is unusual in today’s terms (26 in total, only the first nine performed so far). In the last twenty years, there has been a growing interest in his compositions, many of which were commissioned by specific artists or ensembles. Some of the last rather extensive cycles include motets Nirmal hridaj, which was premiered in 2014 by the choirs Iuvenalis Vox and Ensemble Versus. Emmert's musical legacy receives attention mainly in chamber compositions by Kantiléna, violinist Milan Paľa, percussionist Martin Opršál, conductor Ondrej Olos and soprano Hana Škarková. Ensemble Opera Diversa performed Emmert's Concerto for Alto Flute and Chamber Orchestra with soloist Kristina Vaculová in 2014. However, a large number of compositions for a larger performing body remain unplayed.
