Cultural newsletter from the Department of Culture of BCH for July 2023

The Brno cultural newsletter brings you an overview of summer events and opportunities in the near future concerning theatres, clubs, festivals and cultural events in Brno.

Dear fans of Brno culture,

Praise the summer, and the Brno summer doubly so. There's a lot to take in - from theatre stages to music and dance festivals and even summer cinemas. For all this, the organisers and performers deserve a big thank you. Because this makes Brno Brno, with its varied range of programmes that makes the summer holidays more pleasant for both locals and visitors alike, with the latter maybe coming back next year.

At their June meeting, the councillors approved Action Plan No. 2 for the period of 2023 - 2025 based on the Strategy for Culture and Creative Sectors of the City of Brno with all suggestions incorporated. The day after, on 21 June, the XVI Brno Cultural Forum took place, and if you were unable to attend, the staff of the Department of Culture have prepared a recording of the meeting for you. And you, in your own organisation, can already think about the theme of the 17th one, which will focus on how to break down barriers and make culture even more accessible to disadvantaged groups.

What I am really happy about is the opening of the ZET9 rehearsal rooms and studios in the Líšeň quarter of the city, which can be used by artists or craftspeople for the next three years. It is a unique pilot project of the city and CTP, which is gradually revitalising the industrial area and one of the buildings intended for future demolition, offering it to be used as a necessary (and lacking) facility for as yet non-established culture. If ZET9 proves to be successful, I believe it will become an inspiration for other similar and especially longer-term projects.

Have a pleasant and peaceful summer,

Markéta Vaňková
Mayor of Brno

FROM US TO YOU

The board approved action plan No. 2 of the Strategy for Culture and Creative Sectors 2023– 2025

Action Plan No. 2 for the period 2023 - 2025, which is based on the Strategy for Culture and Creative Sectors of the City of Brno, was approved by the councillors on 20.6.2023. The new action plan contains a total of 22 activities placed into three groups. Culture thus has a "timetable" for the next 3 years. New issues such as the accessibility of culture or cultural and creative education are addressed. It is also important to strengthen the cultural infrastructure and projects such as (GET)TO IT!

Culture accessible to all

As part of the new Action Plan No.2 of the Culture and Creative Sectors Strategy 2023-2025, we will also address the accessibility of culture for disadvantaged groups. We are therefore planning the Autumn Brno Cultural Forum on this topic, focusing on how to make culture accessible to ethnic minorities and foreigners, people with sensory or physical disabilities, people with social problems and people with mental illnesses.

At the same time, we are preparing a catalogue of cultural events for the above-mentioned groups.

Are you involved in organising an activity or event for one of the above groups and want to be more visible? Write to us at kultura@brno.cz

Another of the jazz evenings regularly organised by the Brno Philharmonic was dedicated to the duo Will Vinson (alto saxophone) and Aaron Parks (piano). These musicians have been working together in various formations for twenty years. So they decided that it was time to try the most intimate and, according to many, the most difficult - playing as a mere duo. These mid-generation jazz musicians performed a selection of classical jazz material as well as several of their own compositions on Monday 10 March at the Besední dům.  more

This year's first concert by the Brno Contemporary Orchestra from the Auscultation series was entitled Gastro (Cuisine), or Dinner for Magdalena Dobromila Rettig (1785-1845). On Sunday, 2 February, the orchestra performed two compositions, or rather performances and happenings by Ondřej Adámek (*1979), who also conducted the pieces, in the dining room of the Masaryk Student House. This was a fairly unusual situation for the audience, when conductor Pavel Šnajdr did not take his place at the head of the orchestra.  more

The fourth concert in the Brno Philharmonic's Philharmonic at Home subscription series, subtitled Metamorphoses and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, was dedicated to works by Joseph Haydn, Antonín Rejcha and Richard Strauss. Pianist Ivan Ilić was originally scheduled to appear as soloist in Rejcha's Piano Concerto, but for health reasons he cancelled the concert. Jan Bartoš promptly took over, enabling the audience to hear the original programme on Thursday 30 January at the Besední dům.  more

The Brno Philharmonic's New Year's concert on 1 January at the Janáček Theatre is already a well-established tradition. This year was no exception, and the orchestra, led by conductor Michel Tabachnik, gave a performance consisting mainly of works by Johann Strauss the Younger. This was the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra's show opening the 'Strauss Year'. After all, 2025 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the composer, dubbed the king of waltzes. Strauss's compositions were accompanied by works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Richard Strauss and Dimitri Shostakovich.  more

"Culture is a Bridge" was the theme of the second Czech-Austrian Partnership Concert, held on Friday, 20 December at Schloss Thalheim. It was the final evening of the 5th year of the pan-European project Czech Dreams 2024, and also part of the celebrations of the Year of Czech Music and the Concentus Moraviae international music festival. Culture is a bridge that connects not only different generations and social classes, but also entire nations. And the Czech Dreams project, which in 2024 alone presented music by Czech composers in 25 European cities in 17 different countries, is an eloquent example of this. In December alone, besides the final concert in Austria, six more concerts were performed in southern Europe, from Amarante in Portugal to Varaždin in Croatia. The concert was dedicated to the Lower Austrian Governor Erwin Pröll, who has long been committed to building and deepening relations between the Czech Republic and Austria.  more
