Cultural newsletter from the Department of Culture of BCH for July 2023

The Brno cultural newsletter brings you an overview of summer events and opportunities in the near future concerning theatres, clubs, festivals and cultural events in Brno.

Dear fans of Brno culture,

Praise the summer, and the Brno summer doubly so. There's a lot to take in - from theatre stages to music and dance festivals and even summer cinemas. For all this, the organisers and performers deserve a big thank you. Because this makes Brno Brno, with its varied range of programmes that makes the summer holidays more pleasant for both locals and visitors alike, with the latter maybe coming back next year.

At their June meeting, the councillors approved Action Plan No. 2 for the period of 2023 - 2025 based on the Strategy for Culture and Creative Sectors of the City of Brno with all suggestions incorporated. The day after, on 21 June, the XVI Brno Cultural Forum took place, and if you were unable to attend, the staff of the Department of Culture have prepared a recording of the meeting for you. And you, in your own organisation, can already think about the theme of the 17th one, which will focus on how to break down barriers and make culture even more accessible to disadvantaged groups.

What I am really happy about is the opening of the ZET9 rehearsal rooms and studios in the Líšeň quarter of the city, which can be used by artists or craftspeople for the next three years. It is a unique pilot project of the city and CTP, which is gradually revitalising the industrial area and one of the buildings intended for future demolition, offering it to be used as a necessary (and lacking) facility for as yet non-established culture. If ZET9 proves to be successful, I believe it will become an inspiration for other similar and especially longer-term projects.

Have a pleasant and peaceful summer,

Markéta Vaňková
Mayor of Brno

FROM US TO YOU

The board approved action plan No. 2 of the Strategy for Culture and Creative Sectors 2023– 2025

Action Plan No. 2 for the period 2023 - 2025, which is based on the Strategy for Culture and Creative Sectors of the City of Brno, was approved by the councillors on 20.6.2023. The new action plan contains a total of 22 activities placed into three groups. Culture thus has a "timetable" for the next 3 years. New issues such as the accessibility of culture or cultural and creative education are addressed. It is also important to strengthen the cultural infrastructure and projects such as (GET)TO IT!

Culture accessible to all

As part of the new Action Plan No.2 of the Culture and Creative Sectors Strategy 2023-2025, we will also address the accessibility of culture for disadvantaged groups. We are therefore planning the Autumn Brno Cultural Forum on this topic, focusing on how to make culture accessible to ethnic minorities and foreigners, people with sensory or physical disabilities, people with social problems and people with mental illnesses.

At the same time, we are preparing a catalogue of cultural events for the above-mentioned groups.

Are you involved in organising an activity or event for one of the above groups and want to be more visible? Write to us at kultura@brno.cz

On Saturday, 24 August, the Korean radio orchestra KBS Symphony Orchestra with its musical director - Finnish conductor and violinist Pietari Inkinen - came to Brno's Špilberk Festival with an exclusively romantic repertoire. The invitation was also accepted by South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, a graduate of the prestigious Julliard School.  more

For a quarter of a century now, the Brno Philharmonic has been organising the Špilberk Festival at the end of August in the courtyard of the castle of the same name. Four open-air musical evenings offer the audience a selection of concerts featuring classical, film and computer music, as well as often jazz and other genres. This makes it a diverse mix of performers and repertoires with an often pleasant, summery, laid-back ambience. This year's big and rapdily sold-out attraction was the Wednesday evening of 21 August, full of melodies from the James Bond films, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, headed by world-renowned conductor, composer and arranger Steven Mercurio. During the concert, the audience also got to enjoy singers Sara MilfajtováVendula Příhodová and David Krausmore

As part of its European tour, the Taiwanese Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC), under the direction of artistic director and choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, took the city up on its invitation and visited Brno. The concert was held on Monday, 13th August in the hall of the newly renovated Passage Hotel.  more

The final concert of this year's season of the Brno Philharmonic was devoted to works by Antonín Dvořák and Jean Sibelius at the Janáček Theatre. On Thursday, 20 June, Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt, who had not appeared before a Brno audience since January last year, took the lead of the Philharmonic. In the first half of the programme, the orchestra was accompanied by violinist Alexander Sitkovetskymore

In the spirit of the idea that Brno and folklore belong together, the Folklore Ensemble Happening of the Year took place on Thursday 6 June. The event was organised by the Brno UNESCO City of Music Office in cooperation with the Brno Dances and Sings association. The event thus became part of a long-term project that set out to map the amateur music scene in Brno, and not only folk music. Last year Brno City of Music reached out to choirs in a similar way, and in the future will host garage bands and more. This just goes to prove the diversity of Brno's music scene, not only as regards professional ensembles, but also enthusiastic amateurs for whom music is an inseparable part of their lives.  more
