The important organist, teacher and church musician Petr Kolář will receive the Jan Václav Stamic prize for 2018. The ceremonial awarding of the prize will take place at St. Peter and Paul’s cathedral in Brno.
The J.V. Stamic Prize is awarded every year by the German company Die KünstlerGilde, whose federal seat is in Esslingen (Baden-Württemberg). KünstelerGilde is a grouping of artists including musicians, graphic artists and writers. It has existed since 1948, when artists forced to leave their homes in central and eastern Europe after the Second World War met there. Today, the group has members from all around Europe. Each of the artistic fields gives an award to an important artist in the given field once a year. In painting, it is the Lovis Corintha Prize and in literature the Andreas Gryphious Prize. Poets can receive the independent Nikolas Lehnau Prize. The J.V. Stamic Prize has been awarded since 1960. Stamic was an eminent Czech composer and musician, who later moved to Germany, co-founding the Mannheim school, which became an inspiration even for W.A. Mozart.
This year’s recipient of the J.V. Stamic Prize will be Petr Kolař from Brno. MgA. Petr Kolař is an eminent organist, teacher and church musician. He is the choirmaster and organist player for St. Peter and Paul’s cathedral and a teacher at the Brno conservatory. He will be the second Czech-Moravian musician to receive this award.
The public awarding of the prize will take place on Thursday 17 January 2019 from 7 p.m. at St. Peter and Paul’s cathedral. It will be accompanied with music performed by choirs led by Petr Kolař, together with organ compositions presented by Kolař and Dietmar Gräf.
