British Punk Legends The Vibrators Celebrate Their Fortieth Birthday at Fléda

Brno’s Fléda club will resound to 70s punk. The concert of Britain’s The Vibrators will be opened by the Slovak power pop group Princovia, and the evening will be wound up by DJ Wrong.

The Vibrators are returning to Fléda after their successful concert in 2015. During their forty-year career the group has recorded 21 albums. The last of these, On The Guest List, came out ion 2013. The Vibrators were present at the birth of British punk. In September 1976 together with the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, the Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Stranglers and The Damned the group took part in the first punk festival in history. It took place in London’s famous 100 Club and definitively started a new era in popular music. The first singles by The Vibrators, We Vibrate and Pogo Dancing also caught the interest of the legendary DJ John Peel. In 1977 they played support for Iggy Pop on this British tour. Their debut album Pure Mania was placed by The Guinness Encyclopaedia of Popular Music among the 50 best punk records of all time.

Groups such as the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash or The Vibrators also strongly influenced Czechoslovak unofficial music of the eighties. “Punk reached us mainly thanks to Radio Luxembourg and records which people got on the black market or someone brought from the West. The minimalist three-chord aesthetic  founded on simple harmonies, a regular rhythm and an upbeat tempo attracted the musically untrained with their simplicity undirected energy,” adds Marie Butula Cichá, Fléda’s director.

The concert will take place on 25 January from 8:00 pm in the Fléda club.

The Vibrators will be supported on the stage by the Slovak group Princovia, founded in 2002, and who like the headliners have undergone many changes in their line-up. It was founded by Jaro “Leďo” Lederleitner and Martin “Revo” Revický, who then went on to also play in Zóna A. During its existence Princovia has recorded the demo disc Nechceme ísť do Disneylandu! (2003) and the two LPs Čo takto otvoriť hubu?! (2005) and Na zámku sa opäť spieva a tancuje (2011). They characterise the music they now play as power pop, which in many ways overlaps with punk. In 2016 they released the single Kapitán in just 69 copies. From evening to morning the Slovak DJ Wrong will be playing an exclusive set in the style of punk and new wave.

On Saturday, 24 August, the Korean radio orchestra KBS Symphony Orchestra with its musical director - Finnish conductor and violinist Pietari Inkinen - came to Brno's Špilberk Festival with an exclusively romantic repertoire. The invitation was also accepted by South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, a graduate of the prestigious Julliard School.  more

For a quarter of a century now, the Brno Philharmonic has been organising the Špilberk Festival at the end of August in the courtyard of the castle of the same name. Four open-air musical evenings offer the audience a selection of concerts featuring classical, film and computer music, as well as often jazz and other genres. This makes it a diverse mix of performers and repertoires with an often pleasant, summery, laid-back ambience. This year's big and rapdily sold-out attraction was the Wednesday evening of 21 August, full of melodies from the James Bond films, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, headed by world-renowned conductor, composer and arranger Steven Mercurio. During the concert, the audience also got to enjoy singers Sara MilfajtováVendula Příhodová and David Krausmore

As part of its European tour, the Taiwanese Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC), under the direction of artistic director and choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, took the city up on its invitation and visited Brno. The concert was held on Monday, 13th August in the hall of the newly renovated Passage Hotel.  more

The final concert of this year's season of the Brno Philharmonic was devoted to works by Antonín Dvořák and Jean Sibelius at the Janáček Theatre. On Thursday, 20 June, Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt, who had not appeared before a Brno audience since January last year, took the lead of the Philharmonic. In the first half of the programme, the orchestra was accompanied by violinist Alexander Sitkovetskymore

In the spirit of the idea that Brno and folklore belong together, the Folklore Ensemble Happening of the Year took place on Thursday 6 June. The event was organised by the Brno UNESCO City of Music Office in cooperation with the Brno Dances and Sings association. The event thus became part of a long-term project that set out to map the amateur music scene in Brno, and not only folk music. Last year Brno City of Music reached out to choirs in a similar way, and in the future will host garage bands and more. This just goes to prove the diversity of Brno's music scene, not only as regards professional ensembles, but also enthusiastic amateurs for whom music is an inseparable part of their lives.  more
