Batch. The first year of Brno’s biggest club night

Over two nights, more than sixty concerts by artists from dozens of countries will take place in thirteen clubs in Brno. Clubs such as Alterna, ArtBar Druhý Pád, Fléda, Kabinet múz, Kafara, Metro Music Bar, Music Lab, Ponava, Rusty Nail, Sibiř, Sono Music Club, Stará Pekárna, and Vegalité, united in BACH – Brno Association of Club Music, have joined the first edition of the Batch club night.

“The dose of music that awaits you within a one-day or two-day ticket is truly astounding, and so is the genre range. We recommend discovering places you wouldn’t normally visit. The history of Brno’s club scene is long and varied, what makes it unique is the common voice and planning within the BACH association, as well as our useful mobile app that brings you the program of fourteen music clubs throughout the year,” says BACH chairman Vít Kalvoda on behalf of the organizers. Club Night is announced for 30 September and 1 October 2022 in several clubs in Brno. One ticket is valid for the whole event.

Headliners include Argentinian rapper Catnapp, Central and Eastern European punk legends Dezerter from Poland, British crust Extinction of Mankind, Polish post-rockers Trupa Trupa, melancholic Estonian guitar band Holy Motors, Hungarian Miklós Lukács Cimbiosis Trio, and Croatian math-rockers From Another Mother. From Slovakia comes Longital with their freshly released new album Dočista, and Fallgrapp, who move between acoustic and electronica. The best of Czech alternative music will also be present – rappers Idea and Hasan, Kalle from Tábor, Planety from Silesia, Jan Fic, Lazer Viking, Billow, Acid Row, and dozens of others. DJ sets will continue into the morning hours.

Together with the club night, the second edition of the ReConnect music conference will take place from 29 September to 1 October 2022 in the Fléda and Kabinet Múz clubs. It aims to connect music managers, booking agents, and representatives of the club scene, but is aimed at all music professionals. The main part of the conference on Friday 30 September attracts, for example, a panel of European club representatives who will share their know-how, or a workshop on how to use TikTok effectively in a music project. The event is jointly organized by the Music Managers Forum, SoundCzech music agency, and BACH - Brno Association of Club Music. Admission is free upon registration.

Both events will open on the evening of 29 September at Fléda with concerts of Slovenian jazz-pop soul band WCKD Nation, Prešov acoustic techno band BDHS, stoner rockers The Atavists, and the energetic Serbian band KOIKOI. Entrance to the opening night is free with a two-day ticket to Batch.

BACH (Brno Association of Club Music) is the only club association in the country. Established in 2019, during its existence it has been active in negotiations at the regional and national level as well as present in negotiations on the operation of the cultural sphere during the pandemic. A completely unique venture is the BACH mobile app that informs clubs about their program, which can be downloaded at bach.events. The app was developed with the support of the EEA and Norway Grants.

On Saturday, 24 August, the Korean radio orchestra KBS Symphony Orchestra with its musical director - Finnish conductor and violinist Pietari Inkinen - came to Brno's Špilberk Festival with an exclusively romantic repertoire. The invitation was also accepted by South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, a graduate of the prestigious Julliard School.  more

For a quarter of a century now, the Brno Philharmonic has been organising the Špilberk Festival at the end of August in the courtyard of the castle of the same name. Four open-air musical evenings offer the audience a selection of concerts featuring classical, film and computer music, as well as often jazz and other genres. This makes it a diverse mix of performers and repertoires with an often pleasant, summery, laid-back ambience. This year's big and rapdily sold-out attraction was the Wednesday evening of 21 August, full of melodies from the James Bond films, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, headed by world-renowned conductor, composer and arranger Steven Mercurio. During the concert, the audience also got to enjoy singers Sara MilfajtováVendula Příhodová and David Krausmore

As part of its European tour, the Taiwanese Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC), under the direction of artistic director and choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, took the city up on its invitation and visited Brno. The concert was held on Monday, 13th August in the hall of the newly renovated Passage Hotel.  more

The final concert of this year's season of the Brno Philharmonic was devoted to works by Antonín Dvořák and Jean Sibelius at the Janáček Theatre. On Thursday, 20 June, Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt, who had not appeared before a Brno audience since January last year, took the lead of the Philharmonic. In the first half of the programme, the orchestra was accompanied by violinist Alexander Sitkovetskymore

In the spirit of the idea that Brno and folklore belong together, the Folklore Ensemble Happening of the Year took place on Thursday 6 June. The event was organised by the Brno UNESCO City of Music Office in cooperation with the Brno Dances and Sings association. The event thus became part of a long-term project that set out to map the amateur music scene in Brno, and not only folk music. Last year Brno City of Music reached out to choirs in a similar way, and in the future will host garage bands and more. This just goes to prove the diversity of Brno's music scene, not only as regards professional ensembles, but also enthusiastic amateurs for whom music is an inseparable part of their lives.  more
