Soloist with the New York Metropolitan Opera Adam Plachetka, world-famous countertenor Andreas Scholl and the Czech Ensemble Baroque will be performing together on stage. They will be giving the Czech premiere concert performance of the oratorio Saul by Georg Friedrich Händel. The concert will be conducted by Roman Válek.
Händel’s three-act oratorio Saul was first performed in the King’s Theatre in London on 16 January 1739, so the Brno performance will be exactly 280 years later. Together with Adam Plachetka and Andreas Scholl and accompanied by the Czech Ensemble Baroque will be the sopranos Natalie Rubis and Kristýna Vylíčilová, the Polish tenor Krystian Adam and other singers. The libretto by Charles Jennens draws on biblical events, specifically from the First Book of Samuel. The story is of Saul, the first king of Israel and of David, who was to be his heir. The story also includes the mythical figure of the Witch of Endor and the spirit of the prophet Samuel, who the witch summons from the dead. The oratorio also includes, as is typical for Händel, large choral numbers. Saul is one of the most dramatic works that Händel wrote.
The concert will take place on 16 January 2019 from 7.30 p.m. in Besední dům.
