Jenůfa through the lens of the contemporary world. Co-produced by the Moravian Theatre Olomouc and NdB
This timeless story of jealousy, forgiveness and hope will be performed by the Moravian Theatre Olomouc Opera and Operetta Ensemble in its staging of Jenůfa, co-produced with the National Theatre Brno as part of the Janáček Brno Festival. The production team, headed by director Veronika Kos Loulová and conductor Anna Novotná Pešková, will present Jenůfa in its original version from 1904. They will be inspired by stories of clients of the Mum’s Smile (Úsměv mámy) organisation. more

Brno to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Leoš Janáček's birth
The anniversary of the birth of composer Leoš Janáček, who would now be 170 years old, is fast approaching. The Janáček Brno festival, the Janáček Opera NdB and TIC Brno are organising a full-day birthday celebration, which will include a concert, an opera screening, a glimpse into the secrets of Janáček’s opera Jenůfa, with presentations, a programme for children and much more. more
Brno will once again be hosting ŠTETL FEST, the international festival of Jewish culture
The last weekend of the holiday season will see Brno hosting the 3rd international festival of Jewish culture. The festival will feature some important and lesser-known artists such as Franz Kafka, Hugo and Pavel Haas, Ernst Wiesner, Arnold Schöenberg, Helga Hošková, conductor Alexander Liebreich, photographer Jindřich Štreit and Petr Bureš, and will give an insight into their life stories. The programme will offer more than 110 diverse attractions, more than 50 personalities and ensembles from the Czech Republic and abroad, and many kilometres of walks to explore some notable places and find out more about prominent figures from the Jewish community in Brno. ŠTETL FEST is the Czech Republic’s largest festival of Jewish culture. more
The Brno Philharmonic closes the season with Dvořák and Sibelius
This week, the Brno Philharmonic will bid farewell to its 68th season with two great romantic works. For the Janáček Theatre, it has prepared Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in A minor by Antonín Dvořák and Symphony No. 1 by Jean Sibelius. Alexander Sitkovetsky will perform as soloist. more
The eighth annual multi-genre In the Middle (Uprostřed) festival has just launched in the centre of Brno. It starts today and runs for two full months, featuring dozens of open-air performances, concerts and other art forms. The entire programme is completely free of charge to attend. more

The Znojmo Music Festival will present Juditha Triumphans, an oratorio previously unknown in the Czech Republic
The twentieth annual Music Znojmo festival is subtitled "Music and Victory". For the first time in the festival's history, the organisers will present two operas in their own production, three annual concerts charting the history of the event, and a concert on the water or in a straw amphitheatre. The festival will also feature a performance of Juditha Triumphans, an oratorio unknown in the Czech Republic. more
The Ibérica Festival will kick off with the traditional gala concert in the courtyard of Špilberk Castle. The festival, which brings together Spanish, Latin American, Czech and Slovak artistes, will again this year offer a programme packed with concerts, creative workshops, theatre and lectures about Cuba by Tomáš Hanák. The opening night will feature a performance by Spanish Roma singer and pianist Diego Amador and dancer Cristina Aguilera. They will be joined by singer Miguel Lavi and guitarist David Caro. more
The fifth annual Gregoryfest will be held in the newly renovated amphitheatre in Brno - Řečkovice. This year, it will last three whole days and the line-up ranges from stand-up comedy through funk to rap metal. more
On Saturday, 24 August, the Korean radio orchestra KBS Symphony Orchestra with its musical director - Finnish conductor and violinist Pietari Inkinen - came to Brno's Špilberk Festival with an exclusively romantic repertoire. The invitation was also accepted by South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, a graduate of the prestigious Julliard School. more
For a quarter of a century now, the Brno Philharmonic has been organising the Špilberk Festival at the end of August in the courtyard of the castle of the same name. Four open-air musical evenings offer the audience a selection of concerts featuring classical, film and computer music, as well as often jazz and other genres. This makes it a diverse mix of performers and repertoires with an often pleasant, summery, laid-back ambience. This year's big and rapdily sold-out attraction was the Wednesday evening of 21 August, full of melodies from the James Bond films, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, headed by world-renowned conductor, composer and arranger Steven Mercurio. During the concert, the audience also got to enjoy singers Sara Milfajtová, Vendula Příhodová and David Kraus. more
As part of its European tour, the Taiwanese Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC), under the direction of artistic director and choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, took the city up on its invitation and visited Brno. The concert was held on Monday, 13th August in the hall of the newly renovated Passage Hotel. more
The final concert of this year's season of the Brno Philharmonic was devoted to works by Antonín Dvořák and Jean Sibelius at the Janáček Theatre. On Thursday, 20 June, Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt, who had not appeared before a Brno audience since January last year, took the lead of the Philharmonic. In the first half of the programme, the orchestra was accompanied by violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky. more
In the spirit of the idea that Brno and folklore belong together, the Folklore Ensemble Happening of the Year took place on Thursday 6 June. The event was organised by the Brno UNESCO City of Music Office in cooperation with the Brno Dances and Sings association. The event thus became part of a long-term project that set out to map the amateur music scene in Brno, and not only folk music. Last year Brno City of Music reached out to choirs in a similar way, and in the future will host garage bands and more. This just goes to prove the diversity of Brno's music scene, not only as regards professional ensembles, but also enthusiastic amateurs for whom music is an inseparable part of their lives. more
