The Jazzfest festival is coming to an end and after refreshment from the Czech and European scene came the genuine, almost classic American blues. The seventy-two-year-old giant Steve Gadd came to Brno with the guitarist Michael Landau, bass guitarist Jimmy Johnson, trumpeter Walt Fowler and on the piano and Fender Rhodes was Kevin Hayes.
The evening began with Keith Jarrett’s Windup, after which Gadd thanked everyone who had come to the concert and especially that they had come for live music. After Long way home there was Gadd’s favourite anecdote about green foam in the bass drum, to which he dedicated the song Green Foam when recording the album Gratitude. The tepid first third of the concert was livened up by the jazz composition Africa once more by Michael Landau, in which Gadd gave himself a little more room, but the tempo again slowed with a ballad by Jimmy Johnson. Despite the long slow start the evening gradually warmed up, especially in Wilton Felder’s Way back home, when the audience also came to life. Then other greats were recalled and the song Duke’s Anthem paid tribute to Georgi Dukov. The main set, although not the whole evening, ends with Sly Boots by Larry Goldings.
After eighty minutes the tireless band adds another two pieces. Michael Landau in his composition Bues for … took a sprightly guitar solo and in the last song with the pianist Kevin Hayes also took the microphone. He charismatically sang Dylan’s Watching the River Flow. Given the chosen blues set list, it is possibly a pity that they did not include more sung compositions.
It could be seen that these gentlemen have been dedicated to their craft for a long time, with love and they still know how to enjoy it to the full, as suggested by Gadd’s comment: “I hope you have had the same fun as we have”. That was definitely the case. The musicians in the audience could admire the technique and the coordination of all the members of the group and they certainly got what they came for. For the ordinary listener it was possible that the blues and ballad repertoire based on the guitar of Michael Landau at the start seemed a bit humdrum and old school. From the applause in the hall however it was clear that Brno’s Sono Centre was full of dedicated fans, who had come to appreciate the art of the legendary Gadd. Most of those present went for the autographs that after the concert the whole group and all their guests provided. The atmosphere of the whole evening was caught by the concluding words of Steve Gadd: “Thank you for being such a great audience. It was so much fun to play for you.”
