For the twenty-eighth year running, the Concentus Moraviae International Music Festival presents dramaturgically varied and interpretively refined evenings set not only in concert halls, but also in courtyards and chateau salons, castle halls, basilicas, churches and synagogues. The theme of this year’s 28th edition is Between Kroměříž and Vienna. Vienna, the cultural centre of Europe, served as the seat of the Habsburg emperors, while Kroměříž was the home of the archbishops of Olomouc. The dramaturgy of this year’s edition was prepared by a trio of respected experts: the Dean of the JAMU Faculty of Music, harpsichordist, organist and musicologist Barbara Maria Willi; historian, musicologist and choirmaster Vladimír Maňas; and Otto Biba, Austrian musicologist and long-time director of the Vienna Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde archive.
The opening concert held on Tuesday, 30 May in the newly renovated Assembly Hall of the Archbishop’s Chateau in Kroměříž, brought together the aforementioned Kroměříž - Vienna relationship on several levels. In addition to the venue itself, the “Kroměříž element” was enhanced by the participation of conductor Tomáš Netopil, who comes from the seat of the Moravian archbishops. The Viennese line was represented not only by the selection of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major "Eroica", which premiered in Vienna on 7 April 1805, but above all by the participation of the Concentus Musicus Wien ensemble, founded in 1953 by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, cellist, conductor and one of the most important promoters of historically informed interpretation. The icing on the cake is the fact that Concentus Musicus Wien is this year’s resident festival orchestra.
The inception of the festival, opening speeches and traditional parade of mayors and vice-mayors were followed by the Symphony No.3 "Eroica", which was also the only composition of the evening. Conductor Tomáš Netopil led the orchestra without a baton, which immediately showed in the fluidity of contrasts he was able to achieve when working with the instrumentalists. There was nothing to restrict him when he intended a sharp dynamic leap. Yet when he wanted to give the changes a more elegant and nuanced flow, he had many more possibilities for working with the emotionality and overall energy of the piece thanks to refined gestures. It should be added that the Concentus Musicus Wien ensemble, headed by concertmaster Erich Höbarth, responded superbly to Netopil’s direction and managed to transform every small gesture into a unique and musical surface, all with absolute intonation, rhythmic and expressive flawlessness.
The second movement of the Marcia funebre is particularly famous. The Adagio assai contained such a remarkable number of minute musical details and stirrings, which took into account phrasing, work with tempo and dynamics, and above all the emotional charge itself, that one could almost wonder whether Beethoven’s Symphony No.3 could ever have acquired a more fitting and sophisticated “musical overcoat”. The Hall of the Archbishop’s Palace, which was most helpful to the interpretation by the Concentus Musicus ensemble, undoubtedly played its part in the perfect (and here I really do not hesitate to use such a strong word) sound of the oeuvre and staging. Even in the deafening fortissimo (although Beethoven’s mastery of instrumentation certainly plays a role here), the entire orchestral palette remained intelligible and appropriately colourful.
The opening of the 28th edition of the Concentus Moraviae International Music Festival is thus beyond reproach - the breathtaking performances of the orchestra and conductor were crowned by the excellent acoustics of the newly renovated hall. The other works that will be performed by the Concentus Musicus Wien ensemble in residence during the festival also hold great promise. If we also emphasize the refined dramaturgy, based on a suitable combination of discovering infrequently presented works and the stalwarts of the musical repertoire - also within the theme Between Kroměříž and Vienna - we can look forward to a month packed with remarkable musical evenings that no lover of artistic music should miss.
