As part of its European tour, the Taiwanese Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC), under the direction of artistic director and choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, took the city up on its invitation and visited Brno. The concert was held on Monday, 13th August in the hall of the newly renovated Passage Hotel.
The chamber choir, whose members are part of a large philharmonic choir, was founded in 1993. The audience was treated to an hour-long program of vocal and vocal-instrumental pieces (accompanied on the piano by Chieh-Yu Chang) by Indonesian and Taiwanese composers or arrangers. The diverse repertoire could be described as featuring three categories: classical contemporary works, folk songs in arrangements and pop songs. These were accompanied by words spoken by choirmaster Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, who described to the audience the lyrics and stories of the songs, which were mostly written in different languages, such as Mandarin dialects, Hakka, or actually in Taiwanese.
The concert opened with the composition Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord by Slovenian Ambrose Čopi (1973). Together with the other two works - My Final Resting Place (Ken Steven), Ubi Caritas (Hsiang-Chun Huang) - these were three vocal performances during which the TPCC demonstrated its skill in rhythmic and intonational interplay, dynamic balance, phrasing of musical ideas, as well as vocal technique. This was especially evident in the high ambient parts (such as the soprano solo at the end of Ubi Caritas), as well as in the sonically rich parts where the selected singers faithfully imitated the rustling of the forest, the singing of birds and other diverse sounds of nature (especially in My Final Resting Place).
Nor did the ensemble lose any of its quality, prowess and enthusiasm when performing lighter songs, which from a certain point of view carried some degree of pathos. This was primarily the composition Birth (Chung-Yuan Yu), in which a mother sings to her unborn child, beginning with a melodically inventive piano overture that was played with sensitivity and technical bravura by Chieh-Yu Chang. The other three works were in a similar vein: If Tomorrow Were Your Next Life (Ching-Ju Shih), The Moon Represents My Heart (arr. Tien-Hao Jan) and Where I’ve Travelled (arr. Sheng-Hsien Liu), representing Taiwanese and Hakka pop culture.
The evening also featured a performance by choirmaster SzuYun Swing Hsieh, who, like her colleague Dr. YuChung Johnny Ku, conducted the ensemble with ease, insight, natural gestures, and the desired passion. It was no different in the last third of the evening, which was dedicated to folk songs in arrangements. One composition interesting for its sonority was Diu Diu Dang - an allusion to a train passing through a tunnel (the untranslatable title signifying the sound of the train itself), in which the men played the role of a kind of engine while the female part of the choir recited melodic phrases. The work culminates in an unexpected deliberate unfolding of the voices into clusters, which through chromatic passages form the final transposition of the main melody. Listeners were able to relax to the meditative song Tung Oil Blossom, followed by the last song of the programme - the joyful, celebratory, roaring Beautiful Moon Dance, which the choir enriched with percussion, stamping feet and clapping. The song is about fun, dancing and enjoying a good drink, so it’s no coincidence that this song was played at the very end of the concert.
The Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir rightly earned a standing ovation. The choir rewarded the audience for their warm appreciation with an encore, which was a vocalised version of the main theme of Bedřich Smetana's Vltava, a pleasant surprise for the audience that met with great applause.
