Chris Corner released the album Metanoia within his solo project IAMX last autumn. On his tour, he will stop at the Fléda Club in Brno next week. We talked the day before the release of the new EP and video North Star.
Tomorrow, your new EP North Start comes out, today you will premiere on Czech stations Óčko Expres and Radio Expres FM. Why is the pre-premiere held here?
I have a very good relationship with Czech fans, so it is for them a little bit. Although I am not sure whether the North Star is not being released somewhere else as well.
There are three tracks on the North Star – in addition to the original version, there are remixes by Future Fink Squad and Mr. Kitty. Why them?
We had worked together before, they like my music and I have good experience with them. They brought things into the North Star that were not there before, beats and, above all, a completely different atmosphere.
You lived in Berlin for eight years, why did you return to Los Angeles?
Mainly because of the weather. There are severe winters in Berlin, I could not stand it, it was depressing. I needed a place that has a more positive effect, with more light. And I have a lot to do in Los Angeles, I have colleagues here. I will be happy to come back to Berlin, but certainly not in the winter.
David Bowie recorded perhaps his best three albums in Berlin. Did you ever think of him when you worked there?
Not too much. I liked his music as a teenager, but when I started to write my own things, I was much more interested in electronics. Bowie was very important for the whole world of pop music, but many outstanding musicians lived in Berlin. It would actually be very difficult to focus on just one of them. Moreover, Berlin is an amazing city which is interesting in itself. It is creative, inspiring, nearly everything is possible.
So there is no connection between North Star and Black Star?
Definitely not.
According to the reviews, your latest album Metanoia is dismal, devastating and dark. Do you agree?
From a certain point of view, yes. But when I look at it from a personal point of view, it is an album that I listened to. Otherwise, I do not listen to my music but here it was possible. It is an album about my personal struggle with depression and insomnia, and it was reflected in it a lot. Compared to previous records, Metanoia is not as complicated. I cleared up and cracked a lot of things when working on the album. But it is probably very dismal, yes.
What is the first thing you imagine under the word "darkness": a dark room, dark woods, dark mind...what does darkness mean to you?
Darkness means numbness, a lack of sensitivity to me. It is a condition where a person feels nothing, whether it is a mental illness or anything else. A difficult and exhausting condition, where a person does not respond to anything, does not care about anything and is completely absorbed in herself or himself. That is real darkness to me.
Getting lost in dark woods is a typical fairy-tale theme – do you like fairy tales?
I do, a lot. Fairy tales are an escape from reality, whatever their topic. They fascinate me. I am a big fan of Jan Švankmajer. A long time ago, I saw his short film Darkness/Light/Darkness and it got me completely. It may not be a complete fairy tale, but it is equally as inspiring.
Have you ever written a fairy-tale song or do you plan on writing one?
I think that I wrote one, yes. It is the Song of Imaginary Beings from my second album. It is sort of a little fairy tale.
Is your music about lost or found ways? Or is it about finding ways?
I think it is mainly about ways found. About how to find light, how to get to it, find it and not lose hope. It is a research expedition for a better life. In the sense of how to be stronger, more resilient and less vulnerable. It is a way that has been found and is being found.
You play quite often in the Czech Republic. Doesn't it get a bit boring?
No, it is never boring and it does not need to be only in the Czech Republic. During repeated playing, the record does not change, but playing live is always different from the soundcheck to the departure from the concert. People are always different even if you play in the same club several times. It is tremendously rewarding and the more I try to connect with people in the audience, the better it is. I am happiest on stage and I never get bored.
