The now world-famous Swedish band Dirty Loops finished their autumn European tour on Saturday, 30 November at Brno's Metro Music Bar. The band featured on the programme of the seventeenth annual Groove Brno funk, soul and jazz festival. The virtuoso trio, consisting of Jonah Nilsson - vocals and keyboards, Henrik Linder - bass guitar and Aron Mellergård - drums, are famous for their flawless technical proficiency, sophisticated original compositions and cover versions of well-known numbers, especially pop songs. However, these songs are often reharmonised in their arrangements and the style is more a combination of disco, pop and jazz fusion. To avoid having to resort to using pre-recorded backing tracks, the trio was joined on tour by keyboardist and vocalist Kristian Kraftling.
Although it may go without saying, Dirty Loops started their concert right on time, which is definitely not usually the case with popular concerts. The opening three songs, led by Run Away, sounded almost like a suite, which was interrupted only by a short welcome from the Brno fans. This opening sequence showed the direction the gig was likely to take: the playlist was composed of original compositions by the band and covers by other artists. Right from the beginning it also became clear that it would be a flawless performance. During the fourth song, Living For The City (Stevie Wonder cover), vocalist Jonah Nilsson invited the audience to sing along. For a change, however, he didn't sing the individual lines, but invited the audience to improvise each time the phrase "Livin just enough" was heard, making for a minimally interesting effect.
The following Going On A Date featured a more extensive solo by bassist Henrik Linder. In a Latin American-style passage, he performed an absolutely perfect virtuoso bass solo. This went to prove that he really is one of world's top bassists nowadays. In the following ballad It Hurts, singer Jonah Nilsson again showed his huge range. His falsetto was full and strong, even the highest notes. Nilsson then kept switching between "just" singing and parts where he played keyboards, or a combination of both. The band's unmistakable sound was rounded out by drummer Aron Mellergård, who kept the rhythm precise and held the band together with his fragmented yet perfectly tight beats. The only way to describe this performance is "tight as a drum". However, he also got the opportunity to show off a bit during his solo in songs such as Circus or Work Shit Out. The band's overall sound was cemented together by keyboardist and vocalist Kristian Kraftling, who is not an official member of Dirty Loops. However, they hired him so that they wouldn't have to resort to using backing tracks, for which they deserve a huge pat on the back, as using recordings at gigs has sadly become a common practice these days. But Dirty Loops used Kraftling to achieve a full, unadulterated sound, and except for a few absolutely necessary passages, the band avoided backing tracks completely.
The most remarkable thing about the gig was that the band managed to keep the groove perfectly, even when the individual musicians were flaunting their chops. Bassist Henrik Linder, despite his frequent virtuoso runs, showed what his instrument was really there for, and he and drummer Aron Mellergård were what kept the music going. And although the drummer very often embellished his rhythms, the music didn't get lost, which also doesn't happen often. Jonah Nilsson's vocal lines abounded in expressive flourishes and some often very tricky parts, although these posed no challenge for him and all his notes were spot on. His brilliant vocals were complemented by solos and synth backing, nicely rounding out the sound. Kristian Kraftling played a big part in this, but was also offered plenty of space for solos. The sound engineer, who managed to work perfectly with the acoustics of the Metro Music Bar, also deserves a big hand. All the individual tones of the synths, vocals, bass guitar and drums were beautifully clear, which is absolutely essential for such complex music.
All this together made the Dirty Loops gig at the Groove Brno festival a perfect musical experience, one that fans will be talking about for a long time to come. The audience met the musicians' perfect performance with thunderous applause, leading to an encore of three songs at the very end.
