Leoš Janáček (3. June 185–12.August 1928 Ostrava) awaits his round number anniversary – he will have it in the next Year of Czech Music. The Brno opera deals with it as if unable to sell it to the audience, maybe with disdain, it is hard tell from the outside. The only result is that outside the Janáček Brno festival his work is played seldomly and in poor quality. The warning case was the abhorrently done Cunning Little Vixen as part of the Theatre World festival.
I don’t want to whine, above all it is an anniversary, serving as a reminder of a composer, who came to Brno from Hukvaldy when he was eleven years old, and after a few years, when he was considered a folklore weirdo, he matured into a world famous composer. The opera houses from Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, to Metropolitan already know it – it only remains that Brno understand it as well. There was no composer more important than him in Brno and to only recall his work at his anniversary and festivals is really a shame. Leoš, forgive us, and happy birthday. Maybe you will get something better even in theatre, which was named after you unjustly.
In the attached video there is a television production of Výlety páně Broučkovy (The Excursions of Mr. Brouček) with Bohumír Vích playing the main role. Libuše Domanínská, Ivo Žídek, Karel Berman and others perform in the other roles, Václav Neumann is the director.
