On Saturday 14 April, Dělnický dům in Brno-Židenice hosted the traditional performance of the Javorník ensemble and its guests. The Olšava ensemble from Uherský Brod was their guest. The history of these double concerts dates back to 2003, and from that time thirteen folk ensembles have performed on the stage.
Brno’s Javorník was created in the fifties, and the youth gathering quickly changed into a folk ensemble. Collections of material made by its members, especially in the south of Valašsko, are still useful. The songs and dances that were gathered in the ensemble’s beginnings are the inspiration for the creation of choreographies and musical adjustments even now for the younger generation in the ensemble. In time, the folklore of the nearby area of Moravské Kopanice, which kept its authentic folklore elements for even longer than Valašsko, due to the remote mountainous terrain, were added to the repertoire.
“Kopaničár” folklore is nothing new for the members of guest ensemble Olšava. We can date their beginnings to about the same time as Javorník. It formed from the newly restored Slovácký krůžek and gained its name from the river that flows through their hometown of Uherský Brod. Apart from the folk material of the mentioned Carpathian region, Olšava also presented dances from nearby Březová and Korytná, their traditional ones from Uherský Brod, but also the less usual Gypsy and Jewish dances.
With its homely, almost village-like atmosphere, it surely must have pleased the former members, friends of the ensemble and family members, who filled the auditorium to capacity. Let’s look forward to what pleasant guests Javorník will give us next time.
