Bedřich Smetana I Prodaná nevěsta at Špilberk

30/08/24, 19:00

Warm summer evenings are best spent under the stars with music, which is why the Janáček Opera NdB ensemble is bringing an opera performance to the romantic surroundings of Špilberk Castle again this year.

How to sell a bride? Best through a production by director Ondřej Havelka. One of the most popular Czech operas, Bedřich Smetana's Bartered Bride, has been in the repertoire of the Brno theater for more than fifteen years and has still not lost any of its wit and audience popularity.

The plot takes us to a village where Jeník and Marenka live, two young people who like each other. However, Mařenka is to marry the son of a rich farmer, Mícha, to whom her father is in debt. But the young girl is not going to just give up her love and refuses to marry the chosen groom. Jeník does it smartly and uses matchmaker Kecal. But he and Mařenka don't talk about their plans and the whole thing gets a little messy... Ondřej Havelka created a masterfully played musical theater that is based on beautiful folk traditions, but at the same time found a unique perspective on the whole opera. It takes place not, as is usually the custom, in the summer during the harvest, but during the carnival, or as we call the carnival in Moravia! So you can look forward not only to the comedians in the 3rd act, but also to a number of true Moravian carnival masquerades.

In case of bad weather, the performance will be moved to the Janáček Theater with the performance starting at 8:00 p.m. The move will be decided by 10:00 a.m. on the day of the performance at the latest.

Information about moving to JD will be sent to viewers with already purchased tickets to the available contacts of the viewers and will be communicated on Facebook and Instagram of the Janáček Opera House.
