Comedy and director Ondřej Havelka is a combination that never disappoints. Especially when it comes to a comedy by Giuseppe Verdi. Wouldn't you expect this genre from the composer of famous tragic operas? Wrong, Verdi wanted to write a comedy all his life and only got around to it in his last opera. And so a masterpiece inspired by Shakespeare's famous character, the knight Falstaff, was created.
Sir John Falstaff, resident of the Garter Inn. He likes good food and drink, but is particularly interested in local Windsor ladies Alice Ford and Meg Page. The fact that they are married does not matter at all, on the contrary, it adds spice to his love affairs. However, Meg and Alice do not want his favor, so with the help of Mrs. Quicky, they entangle the long-suffering lover in their webs and give him a good lesson. But Falstaff closes the bittersweet comedy with the wise words: "All in the world is but a farce."
Verdi, who experienced a lot himself and was able to enjoy life, left the world a comic opera that is hard to compare. Elegant and witty with an occasional subtle parody of typical Verdi heroic performances, full of ensembles that do not deny Rossini's inspiration, and with humor filled with understanding for all things human, this is his Falstaff, which will again belong to the Brno stage after fifty years.
