In the summer, spectators will have the opportunity to see the ballet in the open air for the fifth time. The NdB Open Air Ballet will traditionally take place this year, in addition to performances of other theaters and musical performances, as part of the Summer at the Bishop's Court in 2022.
The NdB Ballet followed up on the previous successful projects Summer Ballet Cocktail at the Bishop's Court (2017, 2019) and in the courtyard of Špilberk Castle (2018). This time, however, he chose the legendary feature title Romeo and Juliet, in a special modified open air version. The historical appearance of the Bishop's Court under Petrov in Brno literally calls for the introduction of titles such as Shakespeare's most famous love story.
The neoclassical version of Mária Radačovský, directed by Martin Glaser, scenography by Marek Hollé and costumes by Alexandra Grusková, to the beautiful music of Sergei Prokofiev and combined with a sky full of summer constellations, is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. The directors created a new scenography tailored to the Bishop's Court for this summer project. The ballet work, which is inextricably linked to Brno thanks to its world premiere at the Mahen Theater (then Na hradbách Theater) in 1938, will visit another important place in our city.
The dance adaptation of Shakespeare's drama is very popular, and many famous choreographers have created legendary productions around the world to this day during the 20th century. The reason for this is to be found not only in the eternally resonant theme of tragic love, but also in the wonderful music of Sergei Prokofiev, which is considered one of the most beautiful ballet opuses ever. Although our story does not take place in the historical setting and costumes of Renaissance Verona, the directors honor Shakespeare's drama and its main motive for the first flare-up of love between two young people. However, the dominant theme of ballet is the hostile division of society, from whose opponents both lovers come. The intention of the creators was to process the model as a contemporary dance drama, current, resonating with the time and taste of today's ballet spectator.
