Petr Kolař studied organ playing at the Brno Conservatory under the direction of Vratislav Bělský and Zdeňko Nováček and later at JAMU, where he was a student of Alena Veselá. During his studies, he drew attention to his successes at several organ competitions (1986 Opava II. prize, 1988 Brno II. prize, 1989 Prague Spring III. prize, 1991 Deventer I. prize). He participated in interpretation courses with excellent artists and pedagogues in Germany and Austria. He regularly collaborates with the Brno Philharmonic, various chamber ensembles and choirs. He performs solo at home and abroad, in European countries and China. Since the beginning of his artistic career, he has also been working with choirs. In the years 1995–2002, he was the chorus master of the Singing Opera of the National Theater in Brno. For over 20 years, he has held the position of choir director and organist at St. Peter and Paul in Brno, he previously performed this activity in the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on Mendlová náměstí. Since 2001, he has been choirmaster of the Brno Philharmonic Choir Beseda Brno and conductor of the Cathedral Orchestra of St. Peter and Paul. In 2014, he founded the Brno Cathedral Choir Magnificat. Since 1993, he has also been active pedagogically; he first taught organ playing and improvisation at the Sacred Music Department of JAMU in Brno, and since 2000 at the Brno Conservatory. He develops cooperation with representatives of church music outside the Moravian metropolis (in Salzburg, Leipzig, Bratislava, Olomouc), and is a member of the board of directors of the Musica sacra association of church musicians. His art as a conductor and organist is presented by a rich discography; In 2017, he received the Medal of St. Cyril and Methodius and in 2019 he received the Johann-Wenzel-Stamitz Pries prize from the Esslingen art association.
