Vojvodina is an autonomous region in the north of Serbia. The rivers Danube, Sava and Tisa divide it into three historical provinces - Banat, Bačka and Syrmia (Srem), which partly (mostly Banat) extend into neighboring countries. The city of Zrenjanin is the capital of the Central Banat district in Vojvodina.
Gajda (Serbian Gajde) is a common name for several types of Balkan bagpipes. The Vojvodina bagpipe has a double chanterelle with a characteristic wooden horn and one bourdon. Air is pumped using the elbow bellows. Vanja Ilijev is a folk musician from Zrenjanin. The Vojvodina bagpipe is his main instrument. He also plays the accordion and the drombulje, the Serbian Jewish harp. All the music on the album comes from Vojvodina, except for the drombulje tunes, which Vanja learned from Wallachian Romanians in southern Serbia.
