After two years, Xiu Xiu are releasing a new album, Ignore Grief (2023), in which the classic line-up of Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo was joined by drummer David Kendrick, formerly of Devo, Sparks and Gleaming Spire. The group is known for its raw sound, mysterious melodies, breaking down strong lyrics and musical conventions. It covers a wide range of genres including experimental rock, art-pop, post-punk, ambient, noise and electronic music.
Jamie Stewart and Cory McCulloch, then members of Indestructible Beat of Palo Alto and Ten in the Swear Jar, founded Xiu Xiu at the turn of the century. The name of the band came from the main heroines of the Chinese film Xiu Xiu: Sent Down Girl (1998), which is an important source of inspiration for the band. They released their debut album Knife Play (2002) in the original line-up with Lauren Andrews and Yvonne Chen, who left the band after a few years. Over the course of twenty years, the band has changed musicians, of which the only member still playing is Jamie Stewart. Seventh album Dear God, I Hate Myself (2010) was enriched by new member Angela Seo, who joined the band in 2009. They have many successful albums to their credit, including A Promise (2003), Fabulous Muscles (2004) and a cover album of music from the series Twin Peaks called Plays the Music of Twin Peaks (2016).
