Few European regions have recently been as successful in international world music charts as southern Italy and specifically the Salento peninsula, the "heel" of the Italian shoe. One of the relatively new but very interesting bands from this area is the acoustic trio La Cantiga de la Serena, which consists of singer and oriental dulcimer player Fabrizio Piepoli, flutist Giorgia Santoro and lutenist and player of other stringed instruments Adolfo La Volpe. Their album La Mar (2021) focuses on the music of the Mediterranean, seen as a bridge between West and East. The group draws on the folklore of Italy, Spain, North Africa, Greece and the Middle East. He plays medieval dances and songs, spiritual songs including pilgrim songs, medieval secular songs and songs of Sephardic Jews who had to leave today's Spain and Portugal at the end of the 15th century.
