CLASSIC VIENNA, ROMANTIC VIENNA

Vojtěch Matyáš Jírovec (1763–1850), a native of České Budějovice – known abroad as Adalbert Gyrowetz –, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) and Franz Schubert (1797 to 1828) were contemporaries who worked in Vienna at a time when music was still dominated by classical ideals and forms, but slowly a romantic feeling crept into it. The creative references of the mentioned trio of composers capture this shift well. Jírovec remained a classicist author, romantic moments are already announced in Beethoven's particularly late works, we are used to classifying Schubert as essential romantics. All three composers undoubtedly knew each other. It is even said that Jírovec and Schubert were among those who carried the coffin with Beethoven's remains. All three are also buried near each other in Vienna's Währing.
