SCHUBERT MEETS BERIO

Franz Schubert (1797–1828) and Luciano Berio (1925 to 2003) could never meet, each lived in a different century. And yet... In the years 1988–1989, Berio created the composition Rendering, in which he used motifs and other musical material from the sketches that Schubert sketched in the last weeks of his life for the planned Symphony in D major. As Berio noted, these sketches are quite intricate and graceful: they indicate the new path Schubert was embarking on, moving away from Beethoven's influence. The composition Rendering is not an attempt at reconstruction, but a creative dialogue between two composers working in different times. Berio wanted to revive the old colors, such as in Giotto's frescoes in Assisi, without covering up the influence of time or adding "stylish" empty spaces. He mixed Schubert's material with his own music, loosely inspired by Schubert.
