The fourth symphony in E flat major "Romantic" was composed in 1874. However, the anxiously critical composer repeatedly returned to it (as well as to his other symphonies) in the following fifteen years and significantly reworked it. The Romantic Symphony had to wait a long time for its original premiere. The Vienna Philharmonic judged that only the first movement of the symphony was viable, while the other movements were confused, mad. It was only in February 1881 that the famous conductor Hans Richter undertook the first performance, who then presented the symphony for the second time in January 1888. In 1891, its final version was published in print. The Czech premiere took place in Brno under the baton of Otto Kitzler on April 21, 1893; by performing the Romantic Symphony in the spring of 2023, we will commemorate the 130th anniversary of this event, in the case of the Friday concert, even on the exact day.
