SERGEY RACHMANINOV The Rock, symphonic poem, Op. 7, RICHARD WAGNER Wesendonck Lieder (Five poems on lyrics by Mathilde Wesendonck) PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64
Jana Hrochová mezzo-soprano, Brno Philharmonic, conductor Petr Altrichter
• Sergey Rachmaninov’s symphonic “picture”, named after a poem by Lermontov and inspired both by the poem’s first couplet (The little golden cloud slept through the night / On the breast of the giant rock”) and Chekhov’s story “Along the Way” • Richard Wagner’s five songs on lyrics by Mathilde Wesendonck, charming wife of a rich merchant who was the composer’s benefactor • A cycle anticipating the mature style of Wagner’s operatic masterpieces and one of his few non-operatic works that have remained in the repertory • An emotionally charged, “fateful” symphony by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with strong autobiographical traits, originally viewed by himself as not very successful, but today seen as highly representative of the composer
