ALI: chanson project by Alena Antalová and Alex Anders

11/01/25, 19:00 / Činoherní scéna MDB (The Drama Theatre of the Brno City Theatre)

The great return of the chanson! Actress and singer Alena Antalová and composer, lyricist, singer and pianist Alex Anders have created a new musical chanson duo.

Alex Anders writes, composes and sings his wonderful chansons, while accompanying himself on the piano. For a long time he was looking for a performer to join him, until he found Alena Antalová, a woman who sings with soul and heart, which is essential in a chanson, and since then they have been performing together. Alena and Alex are a completely new couple on the music scene, but Alena Antalová in particular is not an unknown person, on the contrary, she is a very popular actress and singer in Brno. There is a huge hole in the area of chanson after the departure of Mrs. Hana Hegerová and Mr. Petr Hapka. At the same time, there is great interest in chansons, especially among the middle and older generations.

People simply enjoy songs with a story about life. About Alex, they claim that he is actually Hapka-Horáček in one, and his singing and piano are equally unique. He is a man with the soul of an artist who played as a pianist for 30 years abroad, where he played for such personalities as Queen Elizabeth of England, Mikhail Gorbachev, Dustin Hoffman, etc.

Nine Crosses

11/03/25, 18:00 / Hudební scéna Městského divadla Brno (Music Theatre)

The musical Nine Crosses, written especially for our theater, tells an old Moravian legend about a cruel act that, according to chronicles, took place around 1540 in a small village near Velká Bíteš. A landowner from Hluboké finds the lifeless body of a man on his way home from the market in Bíteš. He takes it home, and the young foreigner - a Hungarian horse trader - recovers after a while. He falls in love with the landowner's daughter Eliška, but the father does not even want to hear about dowries. The stranger binds Eliška with a promise of loyalty and leaves to sell his estates in Hungary and return with the money for his bride. However, time passes and Luka does not return. Eliška thus succumbs to the insistence of her father and others to marry the miller's son. On the wedding day, Luka returns from Hungary and soon learns about the revelry. Crazy with rage, he swears revenge, which he will eventually carry out together with the gamekeeper Kudla. Together they wait for the wedding procession on the road near Hluboký and end the lives of the wedding guests, including the landowner, Eliška and others. In the end, he takes his mate and himself out of the world. When the other wedding guests catch up, they see a horrible scene. Nine dead bodies. In their memory, nine crosses will be erected at the site of the terrible crime, so that this story of great love and great grudge will never fade from the soil of the Highlands.

My Fair Lady (from Zelňák)

20/03/25, 18:00 / Hudební scéna Městského divadla Brno (Music Theatre)

The famous American musical, which was created based on the well-known theater play Pygmalion by G. B. Shaw. The now classic musical title, which premiered on Broadway in 1956 (a year before Bernstein's famous musical West Side Story, which has been in the repertoire of the City Theater for several years), tells the well-known story of the flower girl Liza Doolittle, who undergoes a transformation into a self-confident young lady… The fact that Líza and her father, the garbage collector Alfréd Doolittle, speak in the original English dialect Cockney, inspired the author of the adaptation and the director Stanislav Moša to transfer the play to the Brno environment and to use the local dialect, the Brno hantec. This is how My Fair Lady was born with the nickname from Zelňák, because the character of Líza moved from the original London market, Covent Garden, to Brno's Zelný trh. It is not just a linguistic innovation, but also a shift to local realities. And so the characters in the introduction are not from the Royal Opera, but from the Reduta, where they did not play Verdi's Aida, but the folk operetta On the Green Meadow...
