Adam Ben Ezra: Heavy Drops

08/04/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

In late 2024, the jazz double bass innovator releases an album that promises to redefine the relationship between double bass and drums, taking grooving to a whole new level and creating a fresh and timeless sound. The material from the album will then be heard on the European tour in the same line-up in which it was recorded.

Dominic Miller

15/04/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

Guitarist Dominic Miller is a perfect example of a musician who, on the one hand, can easily move in the highest spheres of show business, and on the other hand, he has no problem performing in small clubs for a fraction of the audience he is used to from other stations. And not only do both types of those listeners welcome him with open arms, but they also largely intermingle.

JAMU Jazz Department concert

23/04/25, 19:30 / Divadlo Na Orlí (Na Orlí Theatre)

For almost fifteen years, the jazz department of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts has boasted not only an excellent teaching staff, but especially talented students. They also get space during the already traditional festival concert.

Joe Sanders‘ and Parallels James Brandon Lewis Trio

28/04/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

Since leaving the Midwest for California to attend the Brubeck Institute in 2002, double bassist Joe Sanders has been fortunate to perform and learn alongside some of jazz's greatest figures. And the great ride continued: Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove, John Clayton, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd or Wayne Shorter. A stunning gallery under just forty years of age. James Brandon Lewis, the son of a preacher, grew up in Buffalo in a de facto gospel church while listening to jazz titans at home thanks to his parents. This not only created a cultural foundation for him, on which he builds to this day, but it also led him to a musical environment at a young age, when he had the opportunity to meet - already as a beginning saxophonist building on the clarinet foundation, which he had been digging since the age of nine - with local artists, such as is free jazz saxophonist Charles Gayle and saxophonist Grover Washington Jr.

Milan Kašuba 85

30/04/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

He is one of the oldest still active Czech musicians and the Brno jazz scene is unimaginable without him. Guitarist Milan Kašuba's birthday party will be a celebration of sparkling talent and indomitable diligence, virtues that are characteristic of the generation that entered the scene in the 1960s.

Kris Davis Trio

12/05/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

The 43-year-old Canadian is one of the brightest stars of jazz piano in her generation. And also one of the busiest. She rarely goes a year without releasing a new album. And if she does, you can bet she'll release at least two new ones the following year.

Nikol Bóková Trio Klára Pudláková & MAOMAH

14/05/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

Pianist and composer Nikol Bóková is one of the most followed and successful artists of the young generation. Last year alone, she gave concerts in Japan, Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy, among others. She gives concerts and records in various groups and solo, and will bring a stable line-up of her Trio to Brno.

The principle of Maomah's work is to develop original compositions based on classical music through improvisation and rhythmic freedom borrowed from jazz. On the one hand, the double bass and three violins respect the rules of composition, on the other hand, thanks to the abilities and experience of the participants, they can be carried away by the flow of free improvisation, and thanks to this, the compositions of Klára Pudláková, who calls this shift a musical mystery, sound different every time. Musical expression and dynamics are thus not governed by the musical notation, but by the mutual reaction of the musicians and the given moment. This also applies to the current group, in which the original string ensemble (double bass and three violins) has been expanded to include wind instruments (saxophone, saxophone and clarinet, trombone).

Helicopets David Dorůžka & Piotr Wyleżoł Quartet

21/05/25, 19:30 / Cabaret des Péchés

The founder and main character of the Helicopets group is Polish guitarist and composer Adam Baran, a young musician who does not close himself off from any influence and is one of the most promising Polish creators of music touching on jazz. The “Polish quartet” of David Dorůžka and pianist Piotr Wyleżoł, made up of top and experienced players, is hardened by many years of international cooperation. Musically, the new album returns to a purely acoustic sound, combining jazz tradition with elements of folk music and brings a lyrical expression that differs from Dorůžka’s previous album Andromeda’s Mystery, which played with even rock elements. However, fans will not be deprived of any surprises in the case of the recording When the Child Was a Child either. One of them will certainly be the entry of the young accordionist Nicholas Pat, who not only took part in the recording, but will also be a guest of the quartet at the Brno concert. In terms of repertoire, in addition to original compositions, we can also look forward to a surprising interpretation of a piece by American multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens.

Dooušek

03/06/25, 19:00 / Old Bakery Music Cafe (Stará Pekárna)

Dooušek - poetry in the cotton of jazzfolk. The voice of Maria Vrbová - an alto that caresses you, or at least runs down your back. And around it, music that doesn't look perfect, but has a soul. Folk, blues, Latin American rhythms, a little acoustic, a little electric - just what any poem needs. Guitarist Jirka Vrba is behind the original songs, the colors are added by Radek Přibyl's saxophone and transverse flute, Zuzana Křížová's accordion, the rhythm is maintained by Pavel Jaroš's drums and Leo Javora's fretless bass guitar.

JAZZFESTBRNO: BadBadNotGood

24/06/25, 19:30 / Sono Centrum

A famous cocktail of styles that fans of various musical expressions can agree on. It is no coincidence that they have already won two Grammy Awards and three other nominations. The Canadian BadBadNotGood are, however, a two-in-one collective. First, an instrumental trio, and second, a production team – and they are successful in both areas of their activity. As producers, they operate mainly in the hip hop sphere, and have collaborated with such great personalities as Tyler, The Creator (who, by the way, helped them greatly in the beginning to kick-start their careers), Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah and Charlotte Day Wilson.
